From: B.J. Guillot To: All Thread: Alphanumeric Pagers (1/4) Date: 06-Sep-97, 11:11am (Ref# 5680) Does anyone have an Alphanumeric Pager? If so, send me e-mail (bgfax@box.net), or Fido netmail to 1:106/400. I have written a program that seems to work with my alphanumeric pager here in Houston, but am unsure whether the protocols used are pager-company-specific, or if they are general. Don't go out and buy one, since I really have no idea if it'll work or not, but if you already have one, let me know if you are interested in doing some testing. I mean the "real" Alphanumeric pagers with the huge displays, not the psuedo-alphanumeric pagers with the simple one line display that just shows canned messages. You'll need to know two things, at least, according to the way the protocol seems to work with the company in Houston, (1) Your alphanumeric pager number (should be easy) (2) Your paging companys modem number for alphanumeric transmission Regards, bgfax author B.J. Guillot wrote in a message to All: BJG> Does anyone have an Alphanumeric Pager? I use one here in Melbourne, Australia. The paging company accepts two widely used protocols. One is PET protocol, the other has a name which I have forgotten, but the paging people all use it. My understanding is that these two protocols are used worldwide in the paging industry. We have three major paging operators in Australia and they all accept either protocol for direct modem dial-in with alphanumeric messages. I do have a full description of the PET protocol somewhere. If you want it I'll look it up and email it to you. Regards Ger --- WtrGate v0.93 Unreg * Origin: Teletechnique Melbourne (3:633/284)
