From: John Piper To: Jonathan Michaels Thread: some information please (2/3) Date: 19-Nov-97, 8:55pm (Ref# 5836) Hello Jonathan. Replying to a message from Jonathan Michaels to all ... JM> i have just been given an early christmas gift, a us robotics courier JM> v.everyting, upgradeable to x2 or what ever the final mess is going to JM> be .. Ho ho ho. Where've I heard this before? :-) It's definitely upgradable to x2, and presumably, via an SDL, it will be quite perfectly upgradable to whatever 56k standard the ITU settles on. I'm starting to drift off topic. Back to BGFax ... JM> anyway i currently run front door commercial and have decide d to try JM> the fax capabilities out on my modem, it would be nice to have a fax JM> capable telephone. Certainly, especially if your system is online 24 hours a day, as it is. JM> i suppose what i'd like to know is how suitable is the courier as a JM> fax 'engine' behind bgfax ? Quite good. Even the Windows 95 fax software works quite well with a Courier. BGFax works well behind FrontDoor. Mind you, I have found that BGFax doesn't accept faxes sent from one of the fax machines at work, yet a fax/phone in the other room here has no problem. That may simply be a fax or modem incompatibility rather than a specific fault with BGFax. I suppose the best way to test this is to leave Windows 95's fax software to answer the phone. It could be anything ... init strings, the fax software itself, or a plain old incompatibility. As for BGFax, there are several ways to run it. It can be run as a front-end all on its own, enabling you to shell to a BBS program or whatever, but you'll probably find rear-end mode (mailer being the front-end) much better. Read on. JM> please don't get ths next one wrong, i've used fd for about 6 years JM> and for what i need its wonderful .. but as i now have a modem capab;e JM> of making informed comments about my line quality and i do have a JM> dreadful telephone line, i was wondering id bgfax worked better with JM> frontdoor or binkleyterm ? From what I can tell, the choice of mailer (as a front-end) is irrelevant, as once the call is accepted and recognised as a fax call ala the Courier's handy adaptive answer feature, FrontDoor exits with a user-defined errorlevel, and thence leaves BGFax to do the rest, much the same as your BBS software does. If you'd like, I will send you my BGFAX.CNF file. You already have my system batch file and init strings from FDSETUP. I'm happy to help you get going. JM> my fidonet echomail feed is not what it should be. My offer still stands. Mail is coming through here loud and clear, although I am still none the wiser as to why there was a three-day silence. -- John (japp@mpx.com.au) http://www.mpx.com.au/~japp Vescere bracis meis --- FMail/Win32 1.40g+ * Origin: Lateline Mail Emporium - South Sydney, Terra Australis (3:712/841)

Not suitable for business use, but okay for recreational use. Using Class 1, it's a little better. > informed comments about my line quality and i do have a dreadful telephone > line, i was wondering id bgfax worked better with frontdoor or binkleyterm ? I prefer FD, only because I am more familar with it. See the FD-USR.TXT file that comes with BGFAX for more information. Regards, bgfax author
