From: Ian May To: All Thread: Setting It Up (1/11) Date: 18-Jul-97, 11:10am (Ref# 5558) Greetings All! I'm currently running FrontDoor2.12SW, RA2.50 (reg), X00, and now under Win95. I am having problems with the BBS software, and am about to change over to WinFossil 1.12. The modem here is a Hayes Optima 28.8 V34 VFC + 14.4Fax. It's one of the earlier ones, so doesn't have voice. Does anyone have experience of running this with BGFAX, and if so any pointers on set-up would be gratefully received. Regards, Ian ... I am using the same software, but using BNU instead of X00 (I once had X00, but it didn't work for me). Althugh I am using a zoom 28800, our setups seem similar. One other thing, I have had people tell me, "if something doesn't work, take out the Windows FIRST!". I have never done Windows, so I couldn't say. One other thing; the instrucitons for using FrontDoor 2.12 did not work. I had to experiment with many init strings before I got that thing to work. Also using FD 2.12sw and Winfossil 1.11 (although I've used 1.12 fine also), BGFAX 1.70h (and just got the M beta), QuickBBS 2.76a. Everything works just fine including BGFAX using Winfossil. With modem on com 2 irq3 the command line for BGFAX in the master batch file that calls BGFAX is: :FAXIN CD\BGFAX BGFAX /fco:1 c:\fax F2 q /DTE:115200 CD\FD GOTO START The F2 is Fossil port 2. Note that with X00 that would be 1 as X00 numbers ports starting with 0 instead of 1. Note also that if you left off the fossil usage, it would still be 2 with BGFAX. :) I've received many faxes, almost all expected, but a couple from sources that got their numbers messed up. :-) The only software so far that doesn't work with Winfossil was QuickBBS in native Host mode. It won't open the port and crashes. However, if BGFAX is used as the "front end", all works well. Go figure... My hard drive died, and the quick replacement I had handy already had Win95 on it. I loaded the BBS and the mailer from tape, tried out the batch file, and it works - barely. I seem to be missing something in the fossil or settings or something. When a caller tries to connect, there are long pauses, sometimes making them hang up thinking the machine has locked. BGFax quit working at the same time. I have been running BNU, but was thinking of trying the Winfossil. Here are my settings for BNU: c:\fd\bnu /p3 /f+ /t:8192 /r:8192 /l2:57600 c:\fd\bnu /i2+ Mailer calls seem to work fine, but FAX and human callers have proven to be slow or just don't work at all. Your settings for BNU might help me out here. Thanks! Some wisdom for today is... Truth is eternal, knowledge is changeable. It is disastrous to confuse them. --- * Origin: The GOOD News BBS, Chattanooga TN, 423-698-0407 (1:362/112)

There are others too, but generally WinFOSSIL provides more problems than it's worth. Read BJ's READ.ME. I've said it b4, and I'll say it again, v1.11 crashes on a multiline system, which I run here. This was acknowledged by Bryan Woodruff, but I didn't have any luck with BGFAX running under that version either, in fact, it was running fine until I switched to WinFOSSIL. BJ Guillott went out of his way to try and work with Bryan on the problem, but Bryan didn't respond to BJ's netmail. Nor did he respond to any of my messages. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have diced WinFOSSIL, and gone to BNU, and BGFAX now works . BJ will be getting my registration as soon I can gather it together (damned difficult on a pension).. I ran this under WFW3.11, but do not appear to need it under Win95. Without it, the mailer would fail to initialize the modem when swapped to the background task. Win95 seems to work well without it, other than this sluggish action when passing to the human callers. I guess I need to locate the BNU doc's and do some reading. Thanks for the suggestions.
