From: B.J. Guillot To: All Thread: Status Report (1/3) Date: 06-May-97, 4:55am (Ref# 5302) Hello guys... It's been a few weeks since I was last able to talk, so I am making this status report to let people know how things are going with BGFAX. If you've sent me a personal message recently and haven't received a response, it's because I've got so much mail I don't know what to do with it all. I've got about 80 messages waiting to be answered on my bgfax@ blkbox.com address, about 50 on my bjg90783@jetson.uh.edu address, and a couple dozen on my FidoNet netmail address. There are about 30 echomail messages I still need to get, and I'll try to get those within the next few days. The e-mail and netmail will take considerably longer to get to, so if you've e-mailed me with an urgent question, you will probably want to give me a voice call at 281-893-9320. It's much easier for me to handle voice calls, and I prefer that over written questions. I can only reply to about 5-10 e-mail questions per day, and of those, usually half or more require another response back, and always 1 or 2 of them get bounced. It REALLY frustrates me when I spent 10-20 minutes replying in detail to an e-mail message only to find out the e-mail address is not valid. I love echomail, so don't hesitate to send messages in this BGFAX conference. I much prefer to have more than one person read my replies, as it makes me feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck. :-) I've received numerous questions asking if there are any beta versions out yet. No, not yet, but probably by next month. 1.70 is still the most current and up-to-date version. A 1.70c version of POLYFAX is available off of my BBS which includes new queueing features. That version of POLYFAX is not yet available on my web site since it's fairly limited audience. I will be working on enhancing POLYFAX even further tomorrow, and will probably release that new enhancement on my web site. (I'll post an additional echo message here when its ready.) No significant changes were done to BGFAX itself in 1.70c, that's why it's not available off the web or FREQ. There was a minor change to the OS/2 version that is currently in alpha test, having to do with priority level of the BGFAX process, but this has even a smaller audience. The DOS and Win32 versions have remained unchanged. I have about half-a-dozen items on my bug-list for BGFAX, so I expect to have a full-fledged beta out in 3-4 weeks. Also, the BGFAX documentation on my web page will be updated "soon", but I don't have a time frame set yet. I've had an announcement on it that it would be updated in "two weeks", but that was put there a month ago. :-) I've had a few people e-mail me about that. :-) The BBS/Fido system has been getting so few calls lately that I went ahead and took the I-Modem off, and put my Supra Sonic 336V+ back on. I did this because I got frustrated as I saw 4 fax attempts fail yesterday with the I-Modem. (Not 100% the I-Modem's fault, since Intermail 2.29k has some problems too in the way the I-Modem behaves when it receives a fax.) I went ahead and put the Supra back online, since it is very reliable at receiving faxes, and I can't afford to miss any faxed registration forms, of which, I've probably already missed a couple. Although the Supra isn't working as well as it used too in adaptive answer mode. I'll have to fire a bug report off to Supra about this (S192=0 no longer works as well as it used to, not much point to go into detail unless someone wants me to.) As a result, since the I-Modem is not online, I can't host X2 calls anymore, but, as I said before, the number of calls to the BBS are so low that I don't see this as a problem. The ZyXEL 2864I should pick up ISDN calls to that same BBS number, but I have not had the time to test that yet (it almost never works the first time I set it up again, because I always forget something). Other interesting non-BGFAX related news that has happened recently that you should know about... A possible ocean found beneath the surface of Europa, one of the big moons of Jupiter. The AMD K6 microprocessor was released last month. An antimatter "cloud" has been detected near the center of our galaxy. The Pentium II processor will be released within the next few days, however, another math bug has been detected in both the Pentium Pro and the new Pentium II chips. See http://www.x86.org for more details. Regards, B.J. Guillot bgfax author

Any beta code from USR addressing this problem? I'm going to try a faxback service and if I find any multi-document faxback servers, I'll be sure to let you know (more reliable in calling back than the 1-800-DIABETES number). I can't really comment on any speculations about beta code. (That sounds like something you'd hear a politician say. :-) ANY fax back numbers that use multi-document fax would be a BIG help.
